Hair Removal

OUR PATIENT CONCERNS

What is Hair Removal?

Hair removal refers to the process of eliminating unwanted body or facial hair. This can be done temporarily or permanently, depending on the method used. Hair removal is popular for aesthetic, hygienic, or cultural reasons, and is commonly performed on areas like the face, legs, arms, underarms, bikini line, and back.

What Causes Hair Removal?

Hair Removal may be caused by:

  • Cosmetic reasons: To achieve smooth, hair-free skin for aesthetic appeal.
  • Cultural or societal norms: Influenced by beauty standards or traditions.
  • Medical conditions: Such as hirsutism (excessive hair growth) due to hormonal imbalances.
  • Gender-affirming care: As part of transition-related treatments.
  • Hygiene and comfort: Especially in areas prone to sweat or irritation.
  • Athletic purposes: Common among swimmers, cyclists, and bodybuilders for performance or visual reasons.

Medication

1. Eflornithine (Vaniqa)

  • Form: Prescription cream.
  • How it works: Slows down hair growth by inhibiting an enzyme in hair follicles.
  • Used for: Facial hair in women.
  • Effectiveness: Does not remove hair but reduces the rate of regrowth.
  • Side effects: Skin irritation, redness, acne.
  • Note: Hair returns if you stop using it.

2. Oral Hormonal Medications

These are used mainly in women with hormonal imbalances (e.g., PCOS) causing unwanted hair growth.

a. Birth Control Pills

  • How they help: Reduce androgen (male hormone) levels, slowing hair growth.
  • Effectiveness: Good for mild to moderate hirsutism.
  • Side effects: Weight changes, mood swings, nausea.

b. Anti-Androgens (e.g., Spironolactone)

  • How they help: Block the effects of androgens on hair follicles.
  • Used for: Women with excess hair due to high androgen levels.
  • Side effects: Menstrual irregularities, fatigue, low blood pressure.
  • Note: Not safe during pregnancy—must use contraception.

3. Metformin

  • Use: Commonly used in women with PCOS.
  • Effect on hair: Indirectly reduces hair growth by improving insulin sensitivity and lowering androgen levels.
  • Effectiveness: Helps in some cases, but not primarily a hair removal drug.
