What is Hyperpigmentation?

Hyperpigmentation is a common skin condition where certain areas of the skin become darker than the surrounding skin. This happens due to an excess production of melanin, the natural pigment responsible for skin, hair, and eye color.

What Causes Hyperpigmentation?

Hyperpigmentation may be caused by:

  • UV exposure (sunlight is the #1 trigger)
  • Hormonal changes
  • Skin injuries (like acne, eczema, or cuts)
  • Certain medications (e.g., chemotherapy, antibiotics)
  • Medical conditions (like Addison’s disease or hemochromatosis)

Types of Hyperpigmentation:

Melasma

  • Appears as brown or gray-brown patches, usually on the face.
  • Often triggered by hormonal changes (e.g., pregnancy, birth control) or sun exposure.

Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation (PIH)

  • Occurs after injury or inflammation to the skin (e.g., acne, cuts, burns).
  • Common in people with darker skin tones.

Sunspots (Lentigines or Age Spots)

  • Caused by sun exposure over time.
  • Typically found on areas like the face, hands, and shoulders.

Freckles

  • Small brown spots usually caused or darkened by sun exposure.
  • More common in people with fair skin.
