Stretch marks

OUR PATIENT CONCERNS

What is Stretch Marks?

Stretch marks, medically known as striae, are long, narrow streaks or lines that appear on the skin when it is stretched too quickly, causing the collagen and elastin (the skin’s support structure) to rupture. As the skin heals, these lines can develop and become visible as scars.

What Causes Stretch Marks?

Stretch Marks may be caused by:

  • Pregnancy – rapid abdominal growth can stretch the skin.
  • Rapid weight gain or loss – sudden body size changes affect skin tension.
  • Puberty – growth spurts can cause stretch marks on hips, thighs, breasts, or back.
  • Corticosteroid use – long-term use can thin the skin and reduce its ability to stretch.
  • Medical conditions – such as Cushing’s syndrome or Marfan syndrome, which affect skin elasticity.
  • Bodybuilding – intense muscle growth in a short period can lead to stretch marks.

Common Characteristics:

Color: Early stretch marks may appear red, purple, pink, or dark brown, depending on your skin tone. Over time, they usually fade to a lighter or silvery shade.

Texture: The skin in affected areas may feel slightly raised, sunken, or have a wrinkled texture.

Location: Common areas include the abdomen, thighs, hips, breasts, upper arms, buttocks, and lower back.

How Can Stretch Marks Be Treated?

Stretch marks, also known as striae, are caused by rapid stretching of the skin that damages collagen and elastin. While they are not harmful, many people seek treatment to reduce their appearance and improve skin texture. Treatment works best when started early, especially while stretch marks are still red or purple (striae rubra), but older white marks (striae alba) can also be improved.
